On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Defying suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda featuring:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Core Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
