Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
