Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a prominent awards ceremony approaches, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
