Seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
