Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
