A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
